Class is officially in session! What’s a better way to kick off the new school year than by starting with a history and nutrition lesson on your favorite safe-for-school snacks? This lesson is going to be a bit tastier than your conventional academics! Let’s jump right into MadeGood’s first ingredient: organic, all-natural, pure gluten-free oats. You may be wondering, what makes the gluten-free oats “pure”?
To start, here’s a little bit of background on gluten itself:
Gluten is the general term used for the proteins found in wheat, rye, barley, and triticale (a hybrid of wheat and rye). Gluten helps a food hold its shape; it’s sort of like the glue of the food world (see what I did there?).
So where can you find gluten? Gluten is commonly found in bread, baked goods, pasta, pizza, cereal, cookies, crackers, candy, sauce, salad dressing, food colouring, and oats.
But aren’t oats naturally gluten-free? Correct! Pure, uncontaminated oats are gluten-free - the tricky part comes when oats come in contact with other gluten-containing grains. Sometimes factories use the same equipment when processing oats and gluten-containing grains. So, although naturally oats are gluten-free, they can become contaminated at some point during the manufacturing or transportation process.
Well, here at MadeGood, we go above and beyond by only using Purity Protocol oats in our products. Purity Protocol oats are certified gluten-free, meaning they are never exposed to wheat or other gluten containing grains at any point during the producing and manufacturing process. This strict protocol covers everything from selection, growing, harvesting, and transporting.
Purity Protocol is a term defined by Health Canada indicating that oats are considered pure when “harvested, transported, stored, processed, and manufactured under good manufacturing practices to minimize the presence of gluten, (and) can be safely consumed by some persons with celiac disease.” These oats are of the highest quality, which also means we pay top dollar for them to guarantee that all of our products are safe to eat for those with allergies or intolerances. Providing pure oats in our products isn’t just about using high quality ingredients. It’s part of our standard for providing the healthiest, best tasting snacks, for everyone to enjoy. For this reason, whether you have celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or you are trying to steer clear from gluten-containing goods or gluten in general; you can rely on the highest standard of oats from MadeGood.
For those who aren’t familiar with celiac disease- celiac disease is an immune reaction to consuming gluten. If a person has celiac disease and consumes gluten, an immune response is triggered in their small intestine. Over time, this reaction causes damage to the lining of the small intestine and prevents important nutrients from being absorbed into the body properly. There is currently no cure for celiac disease, although eating a gluten-free diet can help alleviate symptoms and promote gut healing. That’s why here at MadeGood, we take our “gluten-free” promise very seriously. Our goal is to provide snacks that are safe for everyone to enjoy, including those with allergies or intolerances.
Now you know more about the standard that is set in Purity Protocol and used in every MadeGood product. Next up... homework! Read your food labels, do a little research, and pick up your favorite box of MadeGood. Because with all of that reading you will likely work up an appetite, and we want you to have the healthiest and tastiest snack to satisfy your hunger and tide you over.
